P. x euramericana cultivars

The Populus x euramericana cultivars of Poplar GIS

Since 1999, the Poplar GIS has been carrying out a genetic improvement program and carrying out its own hybridizations: intra-specific hybrids (Populus deltoides, Populus nigra, Populus trichocarpa) and inter-specific hybrids (Euramerican hybrids, inter-American hybrids, P. trichocarpa x P. maximowiczii).

Euramerican hybrids were obtained from two crossing plans:

  • 5x4 factorial crossing plan (1999-2000): 19 F1 families, 736 clones
  • 25 single-pair crosses (2001-2003): 22 families, 1036 clones

From this initial material, 26 Euramerican clones were selected in 2011, on the basis of data acquired in terms of susceptibility to leaf rust and Drepanopeziza brunnea, vigor, shape and infradensity of the wood.

Then in 2017, from new evaluations in populetum and data acquired in terms of susceptibility to bacterial canker and woolly aphid, three Euramerican clones were chosen for their overall performance:

  • Orcane
  • Galicane
  • Charcane
